What information is required to select the correct dangerous goods box?
Selecting a dangerous goods box should start with the dangerous goods classification, not simply the carton dimensions.
Important information normally includes:
- UN Number
- Proper Shipping Name
- Hazard Class or Division
- Packing Group, where applicable
- Physical form: solid or liquid
- Type and capacity of inner packaging
- Number of inner containers per box
- Maximum gross package weight
- Required cushioning or absorbent materials
- Intended mode of transport: road, sea or air
The permitted packaging configuration depends on the applicable dangerous goods entry and packing instruction, so one UN 4G box should not be assumed to be suitable for every hazardous material.
Can I customized a sample and sample cost?
Yes, we can customize the sample to your size and printing needs. The sample cost depends on your design and packaging details.
What would be the production time?
Usually, the samples only take 1 working days. Mass production time will take 2-4 working days.
Can any heavy-duty corrugated box be used for dangerous goods?
No. High board strength alone does not make a corrugated box suitable as UN specification packaging.
A heavy-duty double-wall or triple-wall carton may provide excellent compression strength, but dangerous goods packaging must also comply with the applicable packaging specification, performance requirements and packing instructions. Even Limited Quantity air shipments cannot simply use any cardboard box; IATA requires the outer packaging to meet specified construction and performance criteria.
Therefore:
Heavy-Duty Box ≠ automatically a Dangerous Goods Box.
What is a UN 4G dangerous goods box?
A UN 4G box is a fiberboard outer packaging designed and tested to meet applicable UN performance-oriented packaging requirements for the transport of certain dangerous goods. The code “4G” identifies the packaging type: “4” represents a box and “G” represents fiberboard.
Unlike an ordinary corrugated shipping carton, a UN 4G packaging design must meet defined construction and performance requirements before the applicable UN specification marking can be applied.
What do X, Y and Z mean in a UN packaging marking?
The letters X, Y and Z indicate the performance level achieved by the packaging design:
- X – suitable for packaging requiring Packing Group I, II or III performance levels
- Y – suitable for Packing Group II or III performance levels
- Z – suitable for Packing Group III performance levels
For example, in a marking such as:
4G / Y30 / S / 26 / CN / XXXXX
“4G” identifies a fiberboard box, “Y” indicates the tested performance level, “30” represents the tested maximum gross mass in kilograms, and “S” indicates packaging intended for solids or inner packagings.
